All gem quality corundum, which are not red, are known as sapphire except Padparadscha, which is the second only variety of corundum, which is given its own name as Ruby being the first one. This pink variety of corundum is sometimes confused with Ruby as it gets its color from chromium as in the case of Ruby but the difference is that the chromium present in pink sapphire is in extremely less quantity. Whereas in the case of Ruby the presence of chromium is strong as Ruby gets its red color entirely due to chromium.
