GEM INFO
PEARL

Pearls are formed by molluscs, which consists of mother-of-pearl and an organic horn substance, which are formed concentrically around micro crystals. When light reflects from these overlapping layers, it produces an iridescent luster, which is known as the “orient of pearl”. Regarding the cultured pearl, an irritant is introduced to initiate the formation of pearl. In the cultured pearl a small bead as the nucleus is used on which the layers are formed. This type of water in which pearl is produced determines the color of that pearl. Pearl is sensitive to acids, dryness and humidity, which makes them less resistant than other gemstones.

Locations:

Natural pearl have taken place in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Manaar (Indian Ocean) and the Red Sea for thousands of years. The cultured pearl is cultivated on the coast of Polynesia and Australia. Both fresh water pearl and cultured pearls are produced in China and Japan. Fresh water pearl is also found in the rivers of Ireland, Scotland, Austria, France, Germany and Mississippi (USA).
