KYANITE

Kyanite crystals are difficult to cut because of their variable hardness (along axes 4.5, across 6 and 7) and cleavage. Gem quality kyanite crystals are pale to deep blue, or white, gray, or green. The color is often present in irregular streaks. Gem quality kyanite crystals are found in Burma, Kenya, Brazil and European Alps. Other deposits are Australia, India and the USA.

Crystal Structure: Triclinic

Hardness: 4.5 along the axes and 6-7 across the axes

Specific Gravity: 3.68

Refractive Index: 1.71-1.73

Colors: Pale to deep blue, or white, gray, or green.

Luster: Vitreous to pearly
