JADE

Jadeite

Till 1863, Jadeite was though as the only Jade when the other variety of jade which is nephrite was found. Jadeite is made up of interlocking granules of pyroxene crystals and is found in variety of colors. The most valuable which is known as the “imperial jade” is a rich emerald-green color which is due to the chromium content. Jadeite has a greasy to pearly luster and exhibits a dimpled surface when polished. Jadeite is mainly found in Burma. The other important locality was Guatemala. Jadeite is also found in California (USA) and Japan.

Specific Gravity: 3.33

Refractive Index: 1.66-1.68

Colors: Green, lilac, white, brown, pink, red, blue, black, orange and yellow.

Luster: Greasy to pearly

 

Nephrite

In 1863 nephrite was discovered as the other variety of jade. Nephrite is made of interlocking structures of amphibole crystals. This structure is tougher than steel that’s why it is a popular material for carving. The iron rich variety has a dark green color whereas the magnesium rich variety shows a creamish green color. Burma is a major source for nephrite. Other localities are Russia, China, North and South islands of New Zealand, the USA, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Taiwan, Italy, Germany, Poland and Switzerland.

Specific Gravity: 2.96

Refractive Index: 1.61-1.63

Colors: Cream to creamish green to deep green.

Luster: Greasy to pearly
